After an eight year gap since his last studio album, A$AP Rocky makes a long, anticipated return with “Don’t Be Dumb”, reminding listeners why he has remained one of hip hop’s most influential and unpredictable artists.
The Harlem rapper, whose last solo project “Testing” was released in 2018, uses this album to balance experimentation with mainstream appeal.
“Don’t Be Dumb” features 15 tracks and a wide range of collaborators, including Tyler, the Creator, Brent Faiyaz, Doechii, Gorillaz and producer Danny Elfman.
The album blends traditional hip hop with trap, psychedelic elements and alternative production, reflecting Rocky’s reputation for pushing creative boundaries. Lyrically, Rocky shows his confidence by addressing his fame, his personal growth and his long absence from music.
The album’s genre blending is clear on “Stole Ya Flow,” which combined traditional hip hop lyricis with heavy bass, merging Rocky’s early sound to modern day productions. On “Stay Here 4 Life,” Rocky directly addresses his fame and life, rapping about living under constant pressure and reflection, including the line about feeling “…trapped in the spotlight,” signaling a more mature and self aware perspective.
The album made a strong commercial debut, earning more than 35 million streams on Spotify in its first 24 hours, which marks the biggest first day streaming performance of Rocky’s career and places the album among the strongest debuts of the year.
Overall, “Don’t Be Dumb” serves as a strong comeback for A$AP Rocky, proving that his time away from music has not diminished his influence. Instead, the album positions him as an artist willing to evolve while still commanding attention in a rapidly changing hip hop landscape. I rate this album a 5 out of 5 because of its traditional, yet creative sound that makes A$AP Rocky different from other mainstream artists.
