People have always looked forward to watching their favorite TV shows. However, it seems that television has lost the spark and excitement it once had, and oftentimes, fans are left unsatisfied.
Viewers want to connect to the story and the characters, but it can prove difficult when the characters are not getting the character development they deserve and instead are left flat. In ‘Stranger Things’, for example, Erica Sinclair started as a supporting character; however, fans quickly grew to like her and saw potential for her to play a bigger role. However, her potential was, for the most part, ignored due to the unnecessarily large cast and seemingly lazy writing. ‘Stranger Things’ also left fans unsatisfied with its ending.
A big part of any show or movie is the finale. Fans want to be as satisfied with the ending as they were with the journey. ‘Stranger Things’ season five was released recently, and it was overall very controversial for fans. Some enjoyed it, while some did not. According to IMDB the finale was the third lowest rated episode with a 7.6/10. The ending was quite up in the air, which some fans struggled with because they did not feel they got enough closure. Many felt the writing of the last season as a whole was lazy and poorly written, with many plot holes.
The final battle was oddly short, and there were inconsistencies, such as no other monsters appearing to help the main antagonist, even though in previous fights with him, there were. The writers should have taken more time to focus on the ending. In a documentary that was released, the creators of the show, the Duffer brothers, explained that they went into filming lacking a fully finished script. With so many years in between seasons, this should not have been an issue.
Another example of an unfulfilling finale is ‘Game of Thrones’, with its lowest-rated episode being the finale, with a 4/10. Many felt the logic was abandoned, and the final arc did not match up with the rest of the show.
These shows were very anticipated and highly enjoyed throughout the world. I think both shows saw their popularity, and it put pressure on the writers, which ultimately led to low-quality final seasons. The writers should have focused more on the direction they wanted to take their shows rather than trying to please every fan or rush through to another project.
I always find myself reaching for the older Shows. I enjoy the longer seasons and episodes; they never felt rushed or incomplete. ‘One Tree Hill’ and ‘The OC’ are two of my favorite TV shows because I enjoyed both of them throughout the entire show, including the finale. They did not go on for too long or become repetitive.
Overall, it depends on finding the right story for the right audience. It can be difficult, but it is possible because creativity is endless, and I hope that down the line, TV shows are given more of a chance instead of being cancelled or built up only to be disappointing in the end.
