The boys’ wrestlers began the season with hard effort and strong determination, winning 51:17 vs. Oswego East on Nov.
25. According to the team, they have a strong sense of companionship that they use to carry each other forward.
“We expect our wrestlers to stay persistent on the path of improvement. The more consistent you are, the more consistent you will be. It is about the team and being there for each other, as it takes both knives to sharpen each other,” head coach, Terrance Kubski, said.
The team has high hopes of making it far this season. Many athletes have invested a significant amount of time and energy in enhancing their abilities on the mat.
“A goal I have for the program is for my teammates and I to go to state. I know some of them have the potential to go and I’d love to have my teammates with me,” senior Ty Sabin said.
“The way we make it to state is to work harder and show up every day,” sophomore Emiliano Ramirez said.
Coach Kubski believes the biggest challenge the team faces is itself.
“We do not focus on what the other schools are doing. We will be prepared to give our best effort in every match and every tournament. Our focus is on what we can control and the effort on the mat,” Kubski said.
A very important aspect of a successful team is taking time to bond with each other and have fun.
“A fun team memory I have is when one day coach surprised us with a team breakfast on a early Saturday morning instead of a practice,” Saban said.
Some athletes have been wrestling for many years, having started the sport for various reasons.
“I have been wrestling for about 7 years. I started because my Dad wrestled, and it made me want to try it,” junior Liam Thompson said.
Athletes see a promising future for the team and hope to see it grow in the future years.
“I hope that every year the program gains more athletes,” senior Nick Breier said. Coach Kubski also sees a bright future for the wrestling program.
“We try not to focus on the past, but there is a rich history of wrestling at Plainfield Central and we look to continue to build on that,” Kubski said. The next game on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. at Joliet Central.
