Freshman students are now permitted to take junior-senior P.E classes in the second semester. This change was implemented to provide freshmen with more choice and variety, and will remain in effect moving forward.
According to Jennifer Tomczak, the head of the P.E. department, this was a district-wide decision agreed upon by all four high schools
“This is a great opportunity for students to have a variety of class options. Wellness class during 1st semester is a core foundation class of fitness concepts, and this carries on with them the remainder of their HS career. Now they can apply these concepts in a choice elective PE class,” Tomczak, said.
“Just like other elective classes in the building, where it is a mix of all grades of students, it will be a great opportunity to meet new people, have fun, and get some exercise in at the same time,” Tomczak said.
Class sizes are still generally the same, and this can be a good way for students to have more choice and opportunity in their schedules.
“It gives younger students a chance to interact with upperclassmen and participate in classes they are interested in,” Alexis Chesser, junior, said.
Some students feel this is a good way to involve freshmen more and encourage them to extend who they are willing to engage with.
“Having freshman students in higher PE classes does make a difference, but not in a bad way. Older students should treat the younger students fairly and politely, and should be good role models for the younger students to look up to in their first year of high school,” Caiden Karinowsky, junior, said
Some students believe this new policy is unfair as they did not get this option.
Freshman students appreciate this opportunity because they get to take classes more suitable for their individual interests.
“You can do many different things that you want to do and still get the knowledge of taking care of yourself,” Caden de Graaf, freshman, said.
