The girl’s soccer team heads into Thursday’s game with a overall record of 3-3. They play tonight against Lockport at Lockport Township Highschool.
“Starting off with a winning record is a highlight, out of the first four games we won three and have had three shutouts so far,” senior, Bella Torres, said.
As the season begins, the team sets a goal to score 50 goals and only let in 36, and with the skills of each player this goal may not be too difficult to achieve.
“Keeping a positive attitude is very important for us” Marissa Jacobs, junior, said.
Along with positive attitudes and scoring goals, maintaining calm and organized plays are important for gameplay.
“A main goal for the season is composure in the final third and working on a three-man defense” Veronica Gordon, senior, said.
The team values working on each skill individually. From attacking to defending, they make sure that each skill is utilized in every game.
“I think our attack has been really good this year. We’ve scored 18 goals in 4 games,” Head Coach Kenneth Schoen said. “And I think defensively we’ve gotten better from our games last week to our games this week.”
With a strong skill set on the field, the team also excels in communication, whether it be communication during games or just good team chemistry.
““A lot of us hangout outside of school and we all talk. The camps for summer helped to get to know everyone on the team,” Riley Freischlag, sophomore, said.
With the start of the season, goals and anticipation of games can be exciting, but the team is sure to be prepared for any obstacle that comes their way.
“I think every year you’re going to have challenges that come up that you can’t foresee during the year. There’s going to be injuries over the years, and were going to have to overcome that and obviously there’s going to be ups and downs. We just have to keep a positive attitude when things maybe aren’t going our way,” Schoen said.
The hopes are high for the upcoming season, and the games played so far are only raising the excitement.
““I think we’ve been doing really well; we’ve been winning; we’ve been scoring; and we’ve been taking the lead in the shutout, ” Torres, said.
