The Plainfield Central Boys Golf team is having a winning season so far with a record of 4-2. Each player has been working hard and practicing for their competitions.
Many players are excited for to the Big Cat Cup, an annual golf competition in which the top three pairs earn medals.
“I am really looking forward to the Cup, which is a 2-man scramble tournament that I think my partner and I have a good chance of medaling this year since we were only one stroke off of the top three last year as sophomores,” Eli Hoover, junior, said.
Coach Darren Kobliska is expecting to maintain a winning season this year. Part of winning is helping each athlete improve.
“In many ways, I approach coaching the same way that I do teaching. I work with students of all different experience levels and abilities. My goal is to help each student or player reach their full potential and be the best that they can be,” Kobliska said.
Every team has its strengths and weaknesses, highs and lows, and even some challenges.
“One of the main challenges we might face this season is ensuring that the entire team consistently performs, rather than relying on just a few individuals to carry the team with high scores, Jacob Pacholski, junior, said. “Building more consistency across the board will help us be more competitive and successful overall.”
Having positive team chemistry is also important for success. The team feels that when everyone gets along and is on the same page, it can make an impact on the overall game score.
“The team chemistry is good, we all have got each other’s back and always push each other to do more, but we also have fun as well,” Jacob Johnson, junior, said.
Friendships have even helped the team grow.
“I started playing golf due to my friends convincing me to play and the fact that I know that I will be playing the game when I’m older. It seemed fun to learn a game that others find challenging.” Finnley Gregorie, junior, said.
“I started playing with friends and family, jusy to spend time with them, but the more I played the more competitive I got. I have been working on my game and grinding since,” Hoover said.
The team travels to Minooka on Monday, Sept. 22.
