Many students were faced with a new situation when being placed in a study hall in the lunchroom rather than a classroom, partly due to the new eight period day creating more optional study hall periods.
“The cafeteria is being used for study halls this year because it is a bigger area allowing us to house more students with the limited resources that we have,” Assistant Principal Matthew Ambrose said.
Some believe that this could be beneficial for students and staff while others disagree and say it has some negative factors.
“I think it’s a good idea, but I think it just could use a little bit more structure in terms of checking students in and out,”Julisa Scotland, study hall superviser, said. “Students are more likely to be pulled out for different activities, and it gets very hard to keep track of since it becomes a safety issue for you and me.”
“I think the study hall has a negative impact because it’s loud and I cannot focus to do my work,” Nicole Reeder, junior, said.
Many students, though, like the new study halls due to the extra space provided.
“I like being in the cafeteria for study hall because I like how you are more spread out compared to a traditional classroom environment,” Marissa Chester, junior, said.
With the new study halls being in the cafeteria, it makes it harder for students to have a private one-on-one conversation and work privately with any teachers in the study hall.
“I miss having more one-on-one ability to work with students. When I did have the classroom before, I was able to work with all kinds of students and it was nice,” study hall advisor, Melissa Ortiz, said.
According to administration, students seem overall satisfied with their new study hall location.
“No students have come to me, and I am not aware of any student approaching Mr. Chlebek,” Ambrose said.
