Girls’ flag football’s historic first season began with an electrifying win over Plainfield North, the Wildcats beating the Tigers 47-0.
“That first win against Plainfield North meant everything to us as a team. For the girls, it was about proving to themselves that they could learn and play an entirely new sport and be successful at it,” Head coach Jennafer Malak said. “ To beat such a respected rival in our first game of the season shows the kind of heart and determination the girls have. It is a moment the coaches and players will remember forever and we could not be more proud of this team.”
This being flag football’s first year at District 202, there was some uncertainty regarding how the team would perform, but their record is 4 to 5 so far.
“We all want the same thing; to win and that’s what drives all of us to get better at practice and we push each other to become better. I really enjoy playing with this group of girls,” junior Maesyn Overman said.
Many factors contributed to game one’s outcome. Senior Alyssa Link cites team chemistry as, perhaps, the most important factor.
“I think our team chemistry is like no other, we are always laughing in practice and having a good time. We are selfless and willing to do whatever is best for the team,” Link said. “ We all want to win and will do everything we can to win.”
Team chemistry is an essential component for the majority of sports, but flag football provides its players with a wholly unique, team-oriented experience.
“I have played basketball and cross country and this is very different to me since there is so much going on and so many parts that you have to be there for and trust that your team will be there for,” senior Sylvia Magemeneas said.
Their undefeated record was undone prematurely after the second game of the season with a score of 8 to 38. However, this loss has not deterred the team from looking forward to the rest of the season, and has only sparked the girls’ drive to win and improve.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing our record and seeing how much we can achieve as a first year team while watching us players grow closer together and get more skilled at football,” junior Shania Davison said. “A goal that I have for myself is to better my football IQ while also improving my offensive skills so I can be more reliable to my team.”
They are looking for a win at Rosary on Monday, Sept. 22.
