A small, cute, and cozy cafe that’s located in downtown Plainfield had my taste buds melting with delight.
Krema Coffee House was quite small and packed with many people waiting to get a taste of the distinctive food that might not be found at any normal restaurant or food place, such as s’mores toast, a brown sugar bacon gouda sandwich, krema klub salad, lox bagel, you name it.
Though the prices are higher than Starbucks and Dunkin, it is a lovely place to enjoy homemade food, made fresh in front of you as you wait. I decided to go with the brown sugar bacon gouda sandwich along with an iced matcha latte with coconut sweetener.
The sandwich was astounding. Usually I am not a fan of mixing in sweet and salty together for a sandwich, but the unique flavor of the brown sugar bacon mixed with the gouda, egg, and the soft buttery biscuit was perfect. The brown sugar bacon was most of the flavor profile, but everything else was still noticeable and worked well together. They cooked the egg excellently with a slightly runny yoke that pairs well with the topping of gouda cheese. The biscuit was also coated with the same sweet and delicious brown sugar as the bacon, which did leave my hands quite sticky, but added an amazing flavor to the bun.
The matcha latte was also terrific. Most places use artificial matcha powder and just stir it in plain with the beverage. But at Krema, I was able to watch one of the workers make my drink with the right tools for a real matcha such as using a bamboo whisk to help create a smooth, frothy solution of matcha that they pour into the milk. I was really impressed with the taste as well. You have the option to add sweeteners to your drink, which does cost extra, so I chose to add coconut. I wasn’t sure how I’d like it, but it was a splendid choice, and I would definitely go back to try the matcha with other sweeteners.
If you have never had matcha before, it has a sweet, creamy, rich, and grassy taste but in the best way possible. I would recommend this cafe if you are looking for fresh proper matcha to try out.
The service was good and the staff were really sweet and patient when I was deciding what to order. The pricing is worth every penny. For my sandwich and matcha latte, the total came out to be around $18, which may be out of range for some people’s liking, but if you have a few extra dollars lying around, I would recommend giving this cafe a try.
Overall, with the impeccable food, amazing service, and okay pricing, I would give Krema Coffee House a solid 4.5/5 stars.
