With the start of the new school year came more than new pencils and notebooks. Students coming in through the catwalk entrance were greeted with a new, bold mural that replaces the original Plainfield Tornado memorial mural. The new mural features all athletic teams during play, giving a nod to the full range of the athletic programs.
“The goal was not to have it be focused on an individual,” Pat Hanley, athletic director, said. “We want it to be about the team.”
From football to cross country, cheerleading to wrestling, all teams have a place on the wall. The mural exemplifies a big leap in representing all of the athletes who work hard every season.
“The mural shows our victories and school spirit,” Collin Sebalj, junior, said.
The old tornado mural was painted with the intention to display a major part in school history, and the table display is still visible in the cafeteria.
“It had its run and value but it’s time for something new,” Sebalj said.
Rather than a big ribbon cutting event, the mural surprised many students when walking through the doors on the first day of school. Some feel that the brighter look adds a positive vibe, setting things up for a school year all about pride, passion, and tradition.
“It reflects both our school pride and creativity,” Aiden Ekstrom, senior and superfan leader, said.“ It honors something that is a big part of our school.”
The mural is meant to be more than a celebration of sports; it’s a pinpoint in the way athletes are acknowledged, making sure their efforts dont go unoticed.
“The power of teamwork and success achieved here at Plainfield Central will be there for future students to see,” Hanley said.
The new mural brings together students, athletes, and coaches through a shared sense of unity. It reflects ongoing commitment to growth and recognition.
“The mural gives students something to connect over and be proud of,” Ekstrom said.
As the school year continues, the athletic department hopes the mural will serve as a reminder to dedication, teamwork, and school spirit. It marks a fresh chapter while honoring school legacy.
